The Best Hoodies For Men Who Have Stylish But Cosy Layering On Lock

A modern menswear staple with a storied past, hoodies for men have well and truly shaken their rep. Shop our pick of the best, from Arket to Gucci

The mighty hoodie has an illustrious history. First produced by Champion in the 1930s, hoodies were originally marketed to labourers working in freezing warehouses in Upstate New York, and has since become an icon thanks to Rocky Balboa and Norma Kamali, who was among the first designers to embrace the new clothing.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that the term “hoodie” was first used and then picked up negative connotations, seen to be worn mainly by criminals. Then, in 2006, David Cameron said “for some, the hoodie represents all that’s wrong about youth culture in Britain today. For me, adult society’s response to the hoodie shows how far we are from finding the long-term answers to put things right.” Meanwhile, in fashion houses, hoodies found their way onto more and more catwalks (Vetements really did it first), making the hoodie into a wardrobe mainstay.

When it comes to hoodies, it’s difficult to get one wrong. As long as it is cosy, roomy and has long sleeves (even Ryan Gosling failed to make sleeveless hoodies a thing) you’re on to a winner. That said, there are some that trump all others and we felt it our duty to dig them out for you. From sporty, streetwear essentials to high-fashion takes, here’s our pick of the best hoodies for men.

  1. Arket

If there's any singular garment that every man must own, its a decent grey hoodie. Cut in a generous fit primed for everything from post-workout lounging to streetwear styling, Arket's Heavyweight hoodie is made from an innovative blend of organic and recycled cotton. This is where everyday comfort and off-duty style collide

  1. Gucci

As many of us have re-familiarised ourselves with over the last year (thanks in part to Adam Driver and Lady Gaga), Gucci is a fashion house with a storied history. In celebration of Gucci's first centennial, the 'Gucci 1921 Firenze' print of this hoodie speaks to the rich foundation of not just the brand, but its signature Web and Horsebit motifs, which both sit centre stage on the piece's chest. Say it with us now: the father, the son, and the House of Gucci.

  1. Cos

Loungewear gone luxe, Cos' take on the menswear classic is done out in a 100 per cent recycled cashmere construction. Equal parts refined and louche, this hoodie seals its laidback, sartorial appeal with its subtly dropped shoulders and lightly oversized cut.

  1. Pangaia

Recently donned by Tom Holland while on a hard-earned day off set in LA, this unisex lilac purple Pangaia hoodie is made from a breathable recycled cotton, which saves 20,000 litres of water per kilogram of regular cotton. So it seems that Mr Holland knows both what looks good, and what does good.

  1. Abercrombie

Where once it was the height of style credibility to bear a giant moose on the front of your hoodie, the days of Abercrombie’s hyper-visibility are over. The brand, though, is far from past it, delivering here a neutral basic with quiet side chest branding and fleeced interior.

  1. Dickies

Dickies began life as a purveyor of sturdy workwear, so this is a brand you can rely on for wares that last and last, without the prohibitive price of other designers. Though best known for its work jackets and double knee trousers, Dickies’ hoodies are no less rugged despite their cosy appearance, promising years of daily wear.

  1. Allsaints

There isn’t a lot of choice when it comes to the graphic hoodie: options so often feel over-designed and helplessly gauche. But stress not: there are still hoodies out there that you’d be proud to be seen wearing with your dress pants and Converse. Top of our list right now: this Allsaints pullover with ‘80s neon branding and (what else?) a kitten sitting in a sherry glass.

  1. Adidas Originals

Just a simple cream-hued hoodie? Look again. Emblazoned with Adidas' signature Three Stripe motif at the bicep, this sportwise hoodie brings a touch of militaristic utilitarianism to the louche loungewear silhouette. Aye, aye, Captain Adidas.

  1. Burberry

Simple but statement-making, Burberry's take on loungewear is characteristically sharp and luxurious. Boasting a rich organic loop-back cotton construction, this noir black hoodie is defined by its emboldened logo detail that runs across its chest.

  1. AMI

Putting together the perfect outfit is a sartorial house of cards… but at the top of the deck? AMI's instantly-recognisable Ami De Couer motif. Sat confidently on the chest of this knitted hoodie, look no further for your winter hero piece
